Description
I grew up hearing this song sung in church. As a small child I thought we were singing, “Bringing in the Sheets.” I never questioned it much back then, but as my mom hung our laundry to dry on the clothes line out back, I figured it was connected to that type of chore in some way. It wasn’t until years later I learned that was not the case.
The chore the hymn refers to is one for farmers who bring in the sheaves of grain. It’s a beautiful picture of harvest. For the Christian, the goal is to glean and harvest eternal souls for the Lord. To bring in the sheaves for Him and His glory.
Written in 1874 by Knowles Shaw. Inspired by Psalm 126:6, “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” This popular American Gospel song historically was used almost exclusively by Protestant Christians (though the content is not specifically Protestant in nature). Though Shaw also wrote music for these words, they are now usually set to a tune by George Minor which was written in 1880.
===Bringing in the Sheaves Lyrics
Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves
Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows
Fearing neither clouds nor winter’s chilling breeze;
By and by the harvest, and the labor ended
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves
Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master
Though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves;
When our weeping’s over, He will bid us welcome,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
